There is the story we tell ourselves while something is happening and then there is the story we tell ourselves years later when we understand more completely what happened.

In Chapter Five of Storycatcher, Making Sense of our Lives through the Power and Practice of Story, author Christina Baldwin writes about her experience being a peace activist while her brother was a soldier in Viet Nam. Instead of being threatened, their brother/sister bond was strengthened by their alternate responses to their generation's war and the story focuses on their experience as twenty year olds, and now fifty year olds. A chapter that speaks wisdom from the voice of the foot soldier thirty years later, readers can see how story moves us from survival to insight and meaning.

Christina has been using the Spiral of Experience in workshops and seminars since the early 1990s and offers it as a map for making sense out of life that can be applied to any life event that we work with in story over time.
